Age is No Barrier!

Have you ever heard yourself say, “I can’t do that, I am too old for that now” or “I’m past that now” or “I can’t change the way I am” well I’m here to tell you that I have said all of those things to myself for many years. That stopped in 2012. It was at that time when I saw a photo of myself at my sons 19th birthday and did not recognise myself in the photo. That was the turning point, I knew it was time to take control of caring for myself. I was 53.

Again my self sabotage took over, however, it wasn’t until March 2013 when my journey for a healthier life truly commenced. I read a book called “I Quit Sugar” by Sarah Wilson. As the book advocated, I cut out all processed refined sugars from my diet and then discovered a correlation between sugar and gluten and how they affect our mental health. Suffering with depression I immediately took note of this correlation because I had also been suffering with a bloated stomach for years. I decided to cut out all gluten and give it a try.  At this same time, I was looking for an alternative to my medication and in July 2013 while travelling through Europe I stopped taking antidepressants unbeknown by my doctor (I do not recommend this). During this trip I discovered I actually felt different in my body and that my mind was much clearer. as if I was waking up and I realised I did not need the medication and I no longer take antidepressant medication.  With taking these steps I had more energy and motivation to improve on my fitness!

Shortly after my return from Europe, I discovered a Mighty pocket rocket called The Betty RockerShe started an online 30 Day Fitness Challenge in October of 2013 called ROCKTOBER and something clicked, and I knew this is it. I had been following her on Instagram and Facebook and with her motivation and inspiration, I knew that Age is No Barrier! that age was an excuse!

I started the challenge at age 54, not having done a workout in over 20 yrs. I took it slow and steady and built up my strength and stamina. It was hard at times and I felt ‘who am I trying to kid here’ this is for the young ones. I was determined to succeed and I also followed Bree’s Body Fuel System her signature Nutrition Guide and Meal Plan to accompany my workouts. The results were astounding and I knew that no matter what age you are physical activity is the key to a healthy life and it’s never too late to start.

Physical Activity is critically important to maintain good health. It helps reduce risk of, or help manage, cardiovascular disease (CVD), type 2 diabetes, prevent unhealthy weight gain and assist with weight loss, strengthen our muscles and bones, maintain or improve blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels. While all of these physical benefits are incredible, most importantly for me it has helped to manage my mental health problems and with the online exercise community that I participate in, I have created opportunities to socialise and meet new people, like you.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that adults 18 and above:

  • Should do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity throughout the week, or do at least 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity throughout the week, or an equivalent combination of moderate- and vigorous-intensity activity.
  • For additional health benefits, adults should increase their moderate-intensity physical activity to 300 minutes per week, or equivalent.
  • Muscle-strengthening activities should be done involving major muscle groups on 2 or more days a week.
  • For those over 64 yrs with poor mobility should perform physical activity to enhance balance and prevent falls, 3 or more days per week.

I absolutely love The Betty Rocker programs and philosophy that I wanted to share everything I know about her with others including family and friends. With her inspiration and guidance I was able to develop my own recipe book “Not Just Fresh Air” and 30 Day Meal Plan and from there I developed my blog: Bev’s Healthy Food

I did all these thing from age 53! It is never too late to start looking after yourself, step by step with consistency you can achieve and reach any goal your heart desires, Age is No Barrier! It’s a state of mind!

After discovering the benefits of taking care of myself, I started working on even bigger goals. You see I have always wanted to meet Bree in person, as we have developed a special relationship via her Rock Your Life Community and my dream was to meet my mentor The Betty Rocker and do a work out with her in person.

The dream came true at age 57! Bree was attending a seminar in Sydney and I got to spend the day with her and yes we did a workout together! Nothing is impossible, the very word says, “Im Possible”
